Kids Acting Out: is a 501(c)3 organization that engages college students to bring theater into the lives of local at-risk elementary and middle-school youth to increase their odds of life success by building their self-esteem, commitment to preparation, teamwork, confidence, and sense of accomplishment.
Participants: work over several months to produce and present a full-length play that includes costuming, set-design and construction, rehearsal, promotion, and performance. Over 65 youth at two middle schools have participated to date.
College students: have a chance to share their talents with the community, grow through peer leadership, and develop their coaching and mentoring skills. 50 college students at two universities have participated to date.
Youth: thrive and perform at levels they, their parents, and their peers never dreamed possible.
Recognized: by numerous university and community awards, funding, and sponsorships.
Conceived by Breanna DiGiammarino in 2001 as part of application for Echols Scholar Program at University of Virginia.
Piloted: semi-annual programs at the University of Virginia, spring 2002 - present, and New York University, spring 2006 - present.
Next step: expand successful university-community collaboration to other campuses in the US, and secure funding to launch national headquarters.
